Itinerary

DAY 1 — Arrival + Pete Mangrove Boardwalk + Southern Coast Check-In

After arriving in Zanzibar, you are welcomed by your guide and driven toward the quiet southern region. Your first stop is the Pete Mangrove Boardwalk, where you take a peaceful walk through one of the island’s most vibrant and ecologically important areas. The wooden platform leads you deep into the mangrove forest, where you learn about tidal ecosystems, medicinal plants, and local conservation efforts.

DAY 2 — Full Cultural Immersion in Makunduchi Village

Today is dedicated to learning about the rich heritage of Makunduchi, one of Zanzibar’s oldest Swahili settlements. Your experience begins with a guided walk through the village, meeting elders and observing daily traditions such as coconut rope making, traditional cooking, and local crafts. You learn about the famous Mwaka Koga Festival, a centuries-old ritual involving spiritual cleansing and renewal — a tradition deeply rooted in Makunduchi identity. Depending on the timing and season, you may witness small traditional ceremonies or meet community groups practicing Swahili music and dance.

DAY 3 — Uzi Island Expedition + Mangrove Canoeing

Your third day takes you deep into one of Zanzibar’s most remote and untouched areas. You travel along the tidal road leading to Uzi Island, a fascinating route that disappears underwater during high tide. When you arrive, you explore the island’s villages, learning about fishing, seaweed harvesting, and the quiet lifestyle that makes Uzi so unique. Later, you begin a magical canoe trip through the thick mangrove forests surrounding the island. Paddling through narrow waterways, you observe birdlife, crabs, and pristine natural scenes that feel untouched by time

DAY 4 — Mtende Beach + Sunset Relaxation

This day is reserved for one of the most spectacular hidden beaches in Zanzibar — Mtende Beach. Surrounded by towering cliffs, the beach reveals its full beauty during low tide, creating a natural playground of turquoise water and white sand. You spend the morning swimming, relaxing, and capturing memorable photographs. Mtende is quiet, with only a few local fishermen passing by, making it perfect for solitude and scenic beauty. The afternoon is extra flexible: you can relax longer at Mtende, visit nearby small villages, or enjoy a late lunch with an ocean view

DAY 5 — Optional Experiences + Departure

Your last day remains flexible based on your departure schedule. You may choose to relax at your hotel, walk along the beach, or add an optional experience such as a dolphin trip in Kizimkazi, a Swahili cooking class, or a cycling tour through local paths. After enjoying your final moments in southern Zanzibar, your guide transfers you to the airport for your departure, bringing your hidden gems adventure to a close.

Frequently asked questions

Are the places in this itinerary touristy?

No — Uzi, Makunduchi, Pete, and Mtende are among the least touristy places in Zanzibar, making this itinerary very peaceful and authentic.

Is the tidal road to Uzi safe?

Yes. Your guide will schedule the visit according to the tides. During high tide, you may use a local boat for crossing.

Can I swim at Mtende Beach?

Absolutely. The water is clear and shallow during low tide. It is also perfect for photography.

What kind of clothing should I pack?

Light clothing is ideal, but for village visits, modest dressing (shoulders and knees covered) is recommended out of respect for local customs.

Can I extend this to a 6- or 7-day trip?

Yes — I can add activities like Kizimkazi dolphins, The Rock Restaurant, Kuza Cave, or Jambiani cultural tours to create a longer package.
